Eight Scotch Egg Wonders in London To Try

Below are 8 of the best scotch eggs in London with a range of inspirations from street food to Indian to seafood!

The Street Food One

Scotchtails, Borough Market
Price – £5

The scotch egg specialists of street food in London has got to be Scotchtails based at Borough Market by London Bridge. Selling their classic and chorizo style scotch eggs can be bought individually or part of a box deal with salad and sweet potato fries for less than £10. For those looking for a flavourful tasty scotch egg on the walk, this is the place to go.

The Award Winner One

Smoking Goat, Shoreditch
Price – TBC

Not currently on their menu but winner of the last nine (yes nine!) years for London’s best scotch egg is Thai restaurant in Shoreditch, Smoking Goat. Their scotch egg which has prevailed is made as you will expect an Asian twist on the classic with pork and offal laab which is a meat popular in northern Thailand. Be on the lookout for when this is next back on the menu as surely not to be missed out on!

The Scottish One

Mac n Wild, Soho
Price – £8.50

This might actually be my favourite scotch egg in the article. Mac n Wild’s scotch egg is probably the most famous and seen on Instagram for London-based foodies and after trying it you can understand why. Traditional pork meat has been replaced with the ultimate winning trio of venison, black pudding and haggis with a runny yolk inside, served on a bed of mustard. As I said this for me is the ultimate scotch egg in London and one to make sure you go back for again and again and a third time.

The Katsu Curry One

Jidori, Covent Garden
Price – £6.00

Scotch Egg AND katsu curry? Now this is a combination I can get on board with. One of the small plates at Japanese restaurant Jidori offers an Eastern twist on the staple classic with a pot of katsu curry sauce for dipping. Priced at just £6, this should be the first thing to order as you sit down for dinner!

The Social Media One

Holborn Dining Room, Holborn
Price – £10

When a scotch egg has won an award for the most likes on Instagram, you know it’s going to be worth the buy. Holborn Dining Room are a traditional British restaurant known for the specialities in all things pie related (they even has their own pie room) and this includes their 2019 scotch egg winner. One their menu as a starter and whilst it may be slightly higher priced than others in this article, in no doubt that will be worth every penny.

The Seafood One

Jikoni, Marylebone
Price – £6.50

A seafood scotch egg? Surely not? Well how about a prawn toast scotch egg. This is the genius and ever so tasty scotch egg from Jikoni in Marylebone which is a must add to your list restaurant if you haven’t yet been. Paired with a banana ketchup (was so nice) and pickled cucumber, the prawn toast scotch egg is soft, delicious and most importantly has a perfect runny yolk as you cut into it.

The Pub One

The Jugged Hare, Liverpool Street
Price – £7.50

I had to include a staple pub classic and I’ve chosen the Venison Scotch Egg from the Jugged Hare which is a really tasty choice from their menu served with a Cumberland sauce. Crispy coating with a tasty venison meat inside around a soft runny egg, this one always stands out whenever asked about what pubs do a scotch egg well. Perfect as a starter before one of their roasts on a Sunday afternoon in London.

The Spicy One

Farzi Café, Piccadilly Circus
Price – £13

The most expensive and probably the most obscure one in the article is from Farzi Café near Piccadilly Circus who specialise in modern twists on traditional Indian cuisine. Farzi Café scotch egg has spiced ground wagyu beef inside a lightly fried coating wrapped around a soft runny egg in the centre. Sitting on top of a bed of chives hollandaise sauce, this is certainly one to try for those looking for something different on the classic scotch egg.
