5 Katsu Curry’s to try in London

An overview of five of the best Katsu curry’s in London to try from chicken to prawn to pumpkin!

The popularity of the Katsu Curry in London seems to know no limits. It seems everywhere is selling it these days from pubs to restaurants to take-outs – such as Wasabi famed for it – and even now in Tesco as a lunchtime snack option.

With so many different variants to choose from, I’ve put together my top X in London to try right now which need special recognition for their taste, flavour and value below in no particular order.

Misato, Chinatown
Rating – 4.4/5
Cost – £6.50

The real to recognise Misato in Chinatown, is usually because there is a queue formed outside it of customers hoping to grab a table in the evening. It’s a restaurant which keeps it simple and the food so tasty with their katsu curry, either chicken or pork, for just £6.50 coming with a side of rice and side salad. A popular venue in London for a Japanese curry, don’t be put off by the queues if you see one as the generous portion is worth the wait.

Hare & Tortoise, Blackfrias
Rating – 4.2/5
Cost – £9.20

With a number of locations across London, Hare & Tortoise serve up a Chicken Katsu Curry which is as tasty as the generous portion for under £10. Look out for the Ebi Katsu Curry as well on the menu which is deep fried prawns katsu curry for the seafood variety at the same price. Lots of other Japanese items on the menu, this is ideal for a mid-week relaxing evening with friends and good food.

Coco Ichibanya, Leicester Square
Rating – 4.5/5
Cost – £13.40

Already after the first two you must be thinking, all these plates are going to look the same. Well, Coco Ichibanya’s offering of a Chicken Katsu Omelette Curry is the change up you needed. It’s a favourite of Instagram and tastes great with the omelette, fried chicken and curry sauce paired so well. It may be double the price of Misato but worth it when you’re next by Leicester Square and in the mood for that curry fix.

Kare Kurry, Soho
Rating – 4.4/5
Cost – £9.90

A katsu curry specialist in London, Kare Kurry is based in Soho and offers three varities of the classic Katsu Curry with chicken, pork and for vegetarians’, pumpkin croquette which I’ve never tried but definitely keen to! All their curry’s are under £10 and can also be bought on Deliveroo for those living close enough to order to enjoy at home.

Tanakatsu, Angel
Rating – 4.7/5
Cost – £12.95

If they’ve got Katsu in their name then you should feel confident they know how to nail a katus curry and Tanakatsu certainly do that. Specialising in sushi and katsu, their four types of katsu curry are chicken, pork, prawn and pumpkin croquette all at just under £13. You won’t leave this place disappointed or hungry that’s for sure so for when next in Angel, head over to sample their speciality katsu curry.
