Dinner at the Colony Grill, The Beaumont

An oasis in the heart of Mayfair.

The Beaumont Hotel in London's Mayfair has long been known for its elegant approach to fine dining- combining old world foodie favourites with cutting edge cookery techniques to create a dining experience that is both welcoming and exciting. Take your seat in the cosily decorated Colony Grill room and enjoy your effortlessly stylish surroundings, and enjoy the gentle sounds of live music drifting in from the Magritte bar next door. The whole room is scrupulously lit, each table carefully spotlit leaving softly shadowed aisles in between, giving an intimate atmosphere without the risk of knocking elbows with your fellow diners.

The menu itself starts with a tempting array of starters that perfectly set the tone for the rest of the meal. Seafood lovers can choose from a classic New York shrimp cocktail, or perhaps a dozen Carlingford Oysters. The Seared Scallops are gorgeously meaty and sumptuous, their richness perfectly balanced by their bed of earthy celeriac puree. The perennially popular Colony Club Salad is generously sized, laden with fresh juicy tomatoes, avocado and crisply fried bacon.

The mains are a gorgeous lot. The dish of the day on my visit happens to be the superlatively delicious Braised Pork Belly, a dish so utterly beguiling that I still find myself daydreaming about it. Sticky velvety pork (with crackling, of course!) so moist and flavoursome that no extra sauce is even wanted, let alone required. The Dover Sole Meuniere is perfectly tender, served on the bone with a topping of dainty brown shrimp. Steak lovers can choose between dry aged Aberdeen Angus and grain fed Prime USDA, cuts available range from classic rib eye to New York strip steaks, ensuring there's a perfect option for every taste.

If you've still room, peruse the dessert menu for something sweet- of course a cheese selection is also available. The 'Damn Good' Chocolate tart is a definite crowd-pleaser, and the Baked Vanilla Cheesecake is a lovely take on the classic New York style. The hotel's Club Sundae is made to your specifications, allowing you to choose your favourite ice cream flavours, sauces and toppings for a perfectly personalised dessert experience. If food theatre is more your style, then the Bananas Foster is not to be missed- caramelised bananas, flambeed at your table in a burst of flame which makes the whole room smell of caramel and rich dark rum!

The staff here are experts in creating the perfect dining experience, managing to be attentive and kind but never overbearing, allowing you ample time to enjoy your meal without feeling rushed- and this dining room is a space that I assure you you'll want to linger in. Ideal for bringing family, friends, or perhaps as a restorative break after shopping in the nearby Mayfair and Oxford Street, you can be certain of a warm welcome at The Beaumont.
