Heads + Tails’ new brunch menu in North London

Check out this fantastic-value, chilled-out brunch in West Hampstead.

As a North Londoner, I was dead chuffed to be invited to Heads + Tails to check out their new brunch offering. Travelling East, West, South and Central London's fun, but there's nothing like chilling out close to home.

A brunch that's both affordable and delicious at @headsandtailsnw: vegan aubergine and chickpea shakshuka (served with braised mushrooms instead of smashed avocado for me because I'm allergic to avos), and the Protein Plate with spicy merguez sausage, chorizo, bacon and house bean mix. One the side: herby scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, charcoal toast, and smashed avocado (just because I'm allergic doesn't mean my brunch buddy should miss out). . The shakshuka was interesting and tasted more Indian-style than Mediterranean, including a raita-like yoghurt on the side. You can add poached eggs if you like, but the dish by itself is £5, which is pretty darn good value. The Protein Plate was the most 'expensive' at £7 – again, very reasonable for London, especially with all the deli-style meats. I also loved the chef's special scrambled eggs. They were so good: creamy, savoury and herby. And both the Clementine Garibaldi and West End Spritz cocktails were amazing (and only £5 each too). A huge thank you to Heads + Tails for having us! . My brunch buddy and I began with a filter coffee – which, happily, was bottomless. Next came our brunch spread: vegan aubergine and chickpea shakshuka (served with braised shitake mushrooms instead of smashed avocado for me because I'm allergic to avos), and the Protein Plate with spicy merguez sausage, chorizo, bacon and house bean mix. One the side: herby scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, charcoal toast, and smashed avocado (just because I'm allergic doesn't mean my brunch buddy should miss out).

The vegan shakshuka was served deconstructed, and was spiced almost Indian-style rather than Mediterranean, with a raita-like yoghurt on the side. You could also add poached eggs on the side for a little extra if you like, but we just had it as it was. The dish costs £5, making it maybe the best value shakshuka dish I've ever seen in London.

The Protein Plate was pretty epic, and at £7 worth the price. If you're a meat fan, you'll love this. The house beans were addictive too.

When ordering eggs on the side, we were recommended the chef's special scrambled eggs. They were so good: creamy, savoury and herby. My brunch buddy reported the smashed avocado as pleasant enough, and the smoked salmon was of a good cut. To my relief, the charcoal toast wasn't gritty, as can happen when too much charcoal powder is added. In this case, only just enough had been added to give the striking colour without negatively affecting the texture.

We arrived at 11am on Sunday, and once the bar opened at 12pm (alcohol isn't served until then on Sundays here), we perused the cocktail menu. My brunch buddy went for a Clementine Garibaldi with Campari, Italicus (a botanical spirit) and clementine juice. I went for a West End Spritz with Aperol, Suze, clementine and bergamot cordial and soda. Both were super refreshing and light, and both a very pocket-friendly £5.

We had a lovely time brunching dining al fresco, but inside had a lovely modern atmosphere too. The staff were all stars, too. This is definitely somewhere I'll visit again for a laid-back brunch,
